My melon plants have thrived this year. Between 2 Florida giant watermelon plants I have 20+ large watermelons. I was so excited. But then, melon after melon, I would harvest only to find they weren't ripe!!! I waited until the tendril dried, then waited a week or two after the tendril dried, then picked one because the field spot was really yellow. I have harvested probably 5 or 6 melons with no luck. I'm turning over my garden to fall plants soon so I was like screw these melons I'm not even going out to this bed anymore. Then today, after a couple weeks, I forced myself to go try one more time. I told myself when this melon is inevitably not ripe, I'm completely giving up and not checking any more. Compost pile for the rest of them. When I went out, this melon was on a vine that was completely dead. The entire vine was brown, shriveled, and the stem on the watermelon was turning brown. Well, lo and behold, I have a ripe one!!! I truly did not think I'd get one this year I'm so excited!! I'm making watermelon granita for the kids ☺️
