For those interested in digging deeper into the world of horticulture, the Idaho Master Gardener Program offers in-depth and comprehensive study. Traditionally this program required many hours of evening in-person instruction that were difficult for many to attend. Recently, however, the course has changed to an online format. This new course offers some live instruction, with opportunity to ask questions, as well as pre-recordings that participants view at their convenience. The online format enables instruction by University of Idaho Extension Educators from throughout Idaho. Chapters from the Idaho Master Gardener Handbook supplement the instruction.
The Idaho Master Gardener Program is not an informal gardening program. It is an intensive 12-week education course followed by hands on training to prepare you to help other gardeners. Upon completion of the course, Idaho Master Gardeners are considered paraprofessionals in home horticulture. The Master Gardener program is nationally recognized, and training received is highly coveted.
The Idaho Master Gardener Program requires:
· 36 hours classroom time (online)
This occurs from mid-January to mid-April. You will be given several open book quizzes and reading assignments to enhance your understanding.
· 40 hours hands-on training/service
You also are expected to give back to the community. To achieve Idaho Master Gardener status, 40 hours of volunteer time is required. You and the extension educator work out how to complete this. You may help answer questions from other gardeners, teach a class to 4-H youth or to the community, or put your knowledge to work helping in other ways.
This course is not for everyone. Those who complete the course find it rigorous yet rewarding. University credit is available for those who may be interested. All associated coursework for the class will be online and through a website called Canvas. Internet access is required. Several hands-on, in person labs will occur during spring months. Scheduling for hands-on training will be arranged after classes begin. A class fee of $200.00, which covers materials and other related expenses, is due and payable with your application. Once the classroom AND volunteer requirements have been fulfilled, you will be refunded $165.00.
