Did you know? This week is “Community Garden Week”—a celebration of people coming together to ensure everyone in the community has a full belly of locally-grown fruits + veggies. But how to get involved? We looked into it for you. So, roll up your sleeves, and let’s get gardening!
What are community gardens?

Aside from what’s obvious given the name, a community garden is a place of education. They offer workshops hosted by Master Gardeners, host cooking classes + give people in urban areas access to agriculture. It’s a fixture in a community, giving people a place – and reason – to gather in central areas of a neighborhood. Community gardens also fight food insecurity by ensuring folks have access to fresh fruits + veggies.
How to get involved
To join one, you’ll need to become a member. The process to become a member ranges from garden to garden but usually involves a plot fee + a cleaning deposit. Once you’re a member, you can begin planting during the “season” garden administrators have decided on. You’ll have a little plot of your own, typically a raised bed.
You can also volunteer at a community garden, instead, and help keep the garden clean + pest free.
