COLUMBIA — Jefferson Farm and Garden held its 9th annual Butterfly Festival on Saturday morning, but had to end before its 2 p.m. end time.
The event included tours of the butterfly house, kid’s activities, vendors, food trucks and a plant sale. Missouri Extension Master Gardeners helped facilitate the event.
The Master Gardeners are volunteers with the motto “helping others learn to grow.” The Gardeners help others in their communities to learn about gardening and environmental education, according to their website.
Attendees were able to meet the new butterflies that arrived at the farm on Wednesday morning.
Through the event, Jan Ivey, the Demonstration Garden coordinator and Master Gardener, said kids were able to learn more about plants and gardening.
“It’s a great opportunity for young people to get to see different things in their growth habit, how to grow different things,” Ivey said. “One of my favorites is when the children get to pull carrots out of the garden.”

Despite the rain, Ivey said it was a good turnout.
“On a rainy Saturday morning, I can understand why people didn’t want to jump out of bed and get out here,” Ivey said. “We’ve got a good turnout so far, and it seems like more people just keep piling in.”
Ivey said that while rain isn’t everyone’s favorite, the cool weather made the event pleasant.
“In my opinion, the weather is perfect,” Ivey said. “Last year it was crazy hot and this year some people are in jackets and sweatshirts and I think that’s wonderful. And it’s beautiful. I mean, the clouds are gorgeous.”
