LA CROSSE (WKBT) — Southern Bluffs Elementary School marked Wisconsin School Garden Day with a ribbon cutting ceremony for its brand-new garden, completing a district-wide initiative to bring garden programming to every public elementary school.
The La Crosse School District has partnered with local nonprofit GROW to establish gardens at all elementary schools, with Southern Bluffs representing the final piece of comprehensive coverage across the district.
“100 percent of the public elementary schools in the district have a garden. So Southern Bluffs was one school we were able to build it from the ground up. This is the first growing season the students in this building will have garden programming and a garden to care for,” said Bonnie Martin.
The partnership between the school district and GROW focuses on connecting all students with healthy food and nature through hands-on learning experiences.
The gardens serve as outdoor classrooms where students can learn about plant growth, nutrition, and environmental stewardship.
GROW has been working with La Crosse schools since 2012, gradually expanding garden programming throughout the district.
