The Chelsea Flower Show’s gold medal-winning garden has found a new home at Leighton Buzzard Youth Centre, offering a dedicated outdoor space for wellbeing.
The garden, designed by award-winning landscape architect Patrick Clarke for The Children’s Society, aims to support children’s and young people’s mental health by providing a welcoming environment.
An official opening event in July gathered councillors, local families, and representatives from Central Bedfordshire Council to celebrate the garden’s arrival.
The garden was inspired by workshops with young people and designed to help them connect with nature and access support calmly.
After its Chelsea Flower Show appearance, the garden was dismantled and carefully transported to Leighton Buzzard Youth Centre, where it was reconstructed over four weeks.
Youth centre participants assisted in planting the final beds, engaging in the garden’s journey from the outset.
A Collaborative Endeavour
Councillor Gareth Mackey expressed his enthusiasm for the garden’s new setting: “It was a pleasure to attend the official opening and see this fantastic space being unveiled for the community. The garden is a wonderful example of what can be achieved when organisations work together with a shared commitment to supporting children, young people, and families.”
Mackey highlighted the significance of the garden’s permanent location at the youth centre, hoping it serves as a place for generations to connect with nature and promote wellbeing.
Supporting Young People and Families
The newly opened space is already active in youth work sessions and aims to host a range of activities, including family sessions, gardening projects, and wellbeing initiatives.
With participation from the young individuals from the youth centre, the garden symbolises a cooperative effort to nurture mental health and community spirit.
