Identification: What’s making these holes?


Am in Southern New England. Found displaced soil in two different spots at the edge of the lawn.

Is this from a tunneling insect or animal? (I had chipmunks in the past but their burrow entrances never had a mound of soul near them.).

I appreciate any insights. Thanks.

    I’m thinking probably a vole given its size. You could use a banana for scale to be certain.

    There’s lots of things that nest in the ground. I will agree with others that chipmunk is most likely but nobody can say for sure.

    One of them idiots decided to burrow in a basement window well.

    Looks like a cicada killer. Big scary looking wasp. Stupid goofballs that will bounce off you and fly away. If you don’t go after them, they’re chill. If you actively fuck with them, they will hurt you. You can brush the soil away, but it’ll just dig out more if you fill it in.

    I got these cheap ground spikes that run on D cell batteries. This is my 2nd year with them and they have eliminated the holes. Groundhogs, chipmunks and snakes have moved on to the neighbors.

    Rodents dont displace the soil that much. For me (also NE) it’s always voles or chipmunks. Yellow Jackets like to make use of said holes sometimes so have to proceed with caution, but never seen that kind of soil displacement from their tunneling, only much larger vermin like Groundhogs or Moles
