This is my friends tree. They want to get rid of it bc it’s blocking the window. What are their options? Move? Sell? Grow it higher?

Prune it back in winter to thin it out and turn it into a giant bonsai

If they had it pruned to thin it out and expose the structure of the tree, it might change their minds about keeping it. Some of the upward growth can be cut back as well. It’s beautiful now, but could look spectacular with a good pruning. It will eventually grow higher, but it will take a long time for that.

Maybe thin it out a bit? That way it would not block that much light.

It’s a weeping Japanese maple. They can be staked to a more upright growth pattern, though it would take some heavy pruning to accomplish this. May be easier to get rid of it and start over. Would have to see what the branching structure is like after the leaves fall.

Prune to thin. Can keep short shrub style. But I have a 35 foot tall one in my yard. If they decide to remove it have them post locally. Someone would pay them to come dig up to try to save it.

Wow. Thanks arborist people. Comments coming in fast. Thanks to everyone who responds

Execution. Your friends. Not the tree.

Kidding of course. I just don’t understand why people would want to take out a tree like this just so people can see in their house easier. I’d rather they sell the house.

That’s a beautiful weeping Japanese maple! Some thinning and it would be quite handsome!

Some people have OCD and can’t be reasoned with.

I know this isn’t at all what the post is asking about, but am I correct that these Japanese Maples do not resprout if you cut them down?

  11. Id kill for that Japanese Maple. Jesus, that is lovely.

Edit: Arborist may can elaborate, but These typical have fairly shallow root systems and can possibly be transplanted with high probability of living if done in fall.

I just would prune the topper branches and that’s it..

Its their house lol they can do whatever they want with that tree

  14. Longjumping-Big-1418

The tree looks way cooler than the house so I guess if they want to decrease their property value…

Well, what’s the view like without the tree? If it’s just some boring regular street, removing the tree doesn’t really improve the view. The only thing you accomplished is killing a tree. Honestly, if it were my house I’d remove and replace with a flowering bush you can train and prune into a small tree overtime. Something pollinators dig. That way you can get your view and a show performed by insect thespians. bDon’t get me wrong, I do love the look of your standard Japanese maple, but in terms of a host species plant, they don’t host very many.

A proper trim and will look sick!!! Or sell it that’s one valuable tree

im no arborist, so forgive me as i just lurk. it’s a beautiful tree and others say it might sell for a good stack. otherwise i agree with everyone else on the thread. the homeowners fundamentally misunderstand why in the hell that tree was put there in the first place. the view from inside the house is supposed to be of that tree. albeit, that tree was also supposed to be maintained and pruned and styled correctly so that the view wouldn’t be a shitty one- aka, the train of thought that led them to think that the tree itself is blocking whatever view they thought they’d keep forever- their options are to take care of that overgrown mess of a tree. its beautiful from the outside but given the misunderstanding of the purpose of that tree its no wonder why they didnt bother to make it look nice when viewed from inside the home. the issue at hand is a product of either laziness, or negligence, or both. looks like they hired someone to put a tree there or that the property came with it and nobody bothered to tell them, “hey! keep that one trimmed up!”

  18. cantbeheldaccoutable

doing anything to that tree outside of a good prune job is going to decrease their property value. just tell them to take good care of that tree and look up how to maintain it

That’s insaaaaaanity!! Digging up and tossing out would be a crime (at least is some POV😜 -if you were to see this for sale at a nursey itd prob be well worth over $500 and that’s being very conservative).

If they are interested in keeping it definitely could be cut back to where they could see out the window but also maintain some privacy.

If they want to get rid of it, post on market place Facebook – for sale but must dig up. You could try $500 and see if you get any bites. Someone would definitely come for $300.

    Such a beautiful JM!
Interested in knowing what the view is out of the window as well, its gotta be something good!

Very expensive. I would definitely keep it. Talk to a tree specialist about either pruning it or moving it so it doesn’t die.

  21. ExternalMaximum6662

    Have it professionally trimmed.

  22. BeerGeek2point0

If they want to get rid of it then that’s their choice. Not everybody has to have a tree if they don’t want it. I’m sure I’ll get downvoted to hell for this opinion but Jesus people act like every tree is sacred. I’ve been a forester for 20 years and I had to accept a long time ago that my passion for trees isn’t universal.

  23. Severe_Can_7893

No way I’d get rid of that. Look out another window.

  24. map2photo

For context; I just planted a variation tree in front of my house. It’s 2’ tall and was $160.

You asked about removing a beautiful expensive tree, in a sub full of folks that love trees. Trim/shape the tree.

I’ll never understand the “I can’t see the windows from the street” phrase. I want privacy. I don’t want people to see in my windows. Once the tree is gone, curtains go up and energy costs increase. Then what? Plant something there again?

Leave the expensive tree in place. Trim it to look nice, just have someone that knows what they’re doing, do the trimming, or it’ll likely have a tough time, since it’s the middle of summer and the worst time to trim a tree.

Good luck, but I’m rooting for the tree.

  25. Drew_Evan

I’d really like to see what this “view” is that they’re missing out on. Can you take a picture from the house looking away?

  26. Interesting-Tackle66

Will they give you the old tree? Better that than cut it down killing it

  27. Closefromadistance

Gorgeous tree! I honestly didn’t know you could sell a mature tree that’s been planted in one spot for years.

    That’s cool!

  28. Nockolisk

I get the feeling there isn’t anything outside that window besides the tree that’s worth looking at.

  29. Firm-Brother2580

Chop it down and grow some native shrubs that actually bring some benefit to the neighborhood.

  30. Zekethebulldog33

Move out, sell house let someone else grow it taller.

  31. fallen55

Sell the house so someone with taste can enjoy it the way it is.
