Style Observer Gardening (SOG) continues to enjoy the serenity of occupational therapist Fleur Nembhard’s garden in lower St Andrew, where a vibrant collection of orchids, bromeliads, and other species serve as both a retreat and a welcoming space for entertaining.
For Nembhard, the joy of hosting goes hand in hand with the sense of peace she finds every time she steps outside to tend her garden.
“My garden is a therapeutic space for me and for our guests, friends, and family that we entertain,” Nembhard said.
Beyond routine upkeep, Nembhard credits her flourishing garden to careful plant selection — choosing varieties built for the local climate — and keeping to a consistent watering and fertilising routine.
“For me, it’s knowing what they can tolerate and matching that with what my environment provides. Plus, paying attention to details — inspecting for pests, keeping up with fertilising, pruning, repotting, making sure they are happy!” Nembhard said.
For aspiring gardeners, Nembhard’s philosophy is rooted in thoughtful planning. Success, she notes, begins with a clear vision: Defining the garden’s purpose early on, choosing plants intentionally, and keeping the ultimate aesthetic in mind.
“Consider what the purpose of your garden is, consider what the mature plants will look like, and select plants that require the time and other resources you have to spend on them,” Nembhard advises. “Arrange the plants with their height in mind. You can change your mind, don’t be afraid to move plants! [Also] take advantage of local resources: The Jamaica Horticultural Society and the Orchid Society can provide great resources and encouragement.”
