As we’re in the middle of the summer months, many people will be spending more time in their gardens, whether it’s just to soak up the sun, do some gardening, or hosting people for various barbecues or other festivities.
But by making sure your garden is a place you look forward to spend time in and making it look nice, yopu might find that you’ll spend more than just your summers in it. However, transforming a garden can be expensive, from buying the various plants you want to add, to all the equipment that might come with it.
But now, one designer has shared her top ten tips on how you can transform your garden space to look more ‘expensive’ and thought out, and the best part is that her tips can be adapted to fit any budgets.
Taking to TikTok, designer Sara Parker often share her top tips and tricks for home interior and how you can transform a room to fit the style you’d like. But in a recent post, she also went on to share her top ten advice on how to transform a garden to ‘look more expensive’.
“Tips to make your landscaping look expensive,” she wrote at the start of her post, before jumping into her tips and tricks.
1. Add a water feature
For her first tip, Sara recommended to add a water feature to your garden, whether it’s a small fountain or a wall feature.
“It doesn’t have to be anything extensive or extreme,” Sara said. “It can even be a simple wall fountain, but I promise it will make a world of difference in your space’s vibe!”
2. Create sections in garden
For her second tip, Sara went on to recommend creating different sections in your garden for the various activities you’re wanting to do, such as entertaining, gardening, and any other activities.
“This will make your space feel cohesieve and serve a purpose,” she explained. “A garden immedietly elevates any outdoor space.”
3. Add warm lighting
Cosy lighting sources will also do a lot in order to make your garden appear more put together and luxurious. But make sure to opt for warm toned lightning sources rather than blue-toned LED lights.
While there’s nothing ‘better’ or ‘between’ warm and cool lighting options, warmer light sources are often prefered in a garden. This is because they create a soft, welcoming glow that flatters natural wood, brick, stone, and plant foliage, whereas bright cool white lights can look clinical and wash out natural green tones.
“Also, incorporate multiple light sources at multiple levels,” Sara added. “This adds depth, dimension, and interest.”
4. Add pavers and pea gravel
As for the ground in your garden, Sara went on to urge people to add pavers where they can, but also opt for pea gravel where you can.
Using pavers in a garden creates clean pathways, functional seating patios, and charming stepping-stone routes. You can opt for the look and material of your choosing, but Sara recommended placing them in diagonally to make them appear even more luxurious-looking.
You can also achieve a similar effect that’s easier to maintain with pea gravel, which uses smooth, rounded stones to create low-maintenance pathways, striking borders, or drought-tolerant dry gardens.
5. Climbing vines and florals
Once again, focusing on the various detail in your garden, Sara went on to urge homeowners to incorporate climbing vines and florals. This could be done on fences or walls on your home to make it look more interesting and intriguing.
Popular flowering climbing plants for gardens include Clematis, Climbing Roses, Honeysuckle, Star Jasmine, and Wisteria. These plants add vertical color, perfume, and life to walls, fences, and arches.
6. Pergolas
Next up, Sara went on to say: “Pergolas make everything feel chic.”
A garden pergola is an outdoor wooden or metal structure with vertical posts and an open crossbeam roof. They define seating areas, support climbing plants like Wisteria or Clematis, and provide partial shade.
7. No red mulch
Moving back to how to decorate the green grass of your garden, mulch is a great addition to garden beds, as it comes with several benefits, including stopping weeds from growuing, keeping the soil moist, and protecting plant roots from heat and cold.
It comes in various different colours, but Sara went on to urge people to stick to the more natural black, brown or pine straw, and thereby ‘staying away’ from the red coloured mulch.
8. Right planters
On top of having garden beds filled with various plants and flowers, you can also add planters with flowers around more areas of your garden. But instead of opting for the cheapest pots you could find, Sara went on to urge people to spend a minute to think about the look of the planter.
“The right planters can add instant elevation,” she said. “Opt for terracotta, iron, [and] ceramics in various shapes and sizes.”
9. Privacy hedges and trees
In order to make your garden space feel more cosy and calm, Sara recommended to plant privacy hedges and trees around your garden to prevent people looking in, while also making it feel more wrapped up and secluded.
Privacy hedges use dense shrubs or trees to block views, reduce noise, and create green boundaries. The most popular alternatives are the fast-growing Cherry Laurel, classic English Yew, and rapid Leylandii, while Beech offers seasonal privacy.
For tree alternatives, many opt for Photinia ‘Red Robin’, Thuja ‘Smaragd’, Leylandii, or pleached Hornbeam. These options block views year-round, fit neatly along boundaries, and handle regular pruning well.
10. Add a focal point
Finally, Sara recommended homeowners to adda focal point to their gardens, saying: “Whether it’s a garden gate, a whimsical fence, or a conversation piece.”
You can be creative with these focal points, allowing them to show off your personality while also complimenting the rest of your garden and its luxurious or thought-out themes.
