Gisborough Hall, a four-star country house hotel in North Yorkshire, UK, has debuted its new destination wellness retreat, called Sakura Spa.
The Hall’s estate, which houses 59 rooms and three luxury shepherd huts, has been privately owned and run by the Chaloner family since it was bought from the royal estate in 1570 – after the dissolution of the monasteries by King Henry VIII.
The project was first announced in August last year.
The spa has been developed by international interior designer Nic Tamlin, spa consultant Nicki Kurran and project management firm Glen Bland Chartered Surveyors.
Concept
Kurran told Spa Business about the concept: “From the start, ‘nature’ has been at the heart of the project. The word “Sakura” is Japanese for cherry blossom, symbolising renewal, beauty and the fleeting nature of life. The concept has been based around ‘tranquillity meets rejuvenation amidst nature’s embrace’. The spa is nestled within lush greenery of the woodland garden, inviting guests to unwind and reconnect with inner peace.”
Four pillars provide the foundation for the spa and the customer experience:
Natural and botanical – the treatments are rooted in nature, using organic plant-based ingredients and natural healing traditions; seasonal food will be served.
Authentic – staff will create a warm, welcoming atmosphere, and the spa will operate in accordance with sustainable practices.
Simplicity – the spa environment will be minimalist and clutter-free to encourage relaxation and the spa menu will be uncomplicated
Mindful – guided breathing, meditation and holistic therapies will be provided to encourage self-care rituals beyond the spa.
Design
There are six treatment rooms, one of which is a couples room and another is dedicated to a vibroacoustic Welnamis RLX lounger by the Gharieni Group, supplied by distributor Ellisons.
There is also a head spa.
The treatment area also has a sleep room for post-treatment relaxation.
The woodland spa garden has a seven-metre vitality pool, supplied by JSA Leisure. There are also three thermal experiences, supplied by Anapos, including a herbal sauna, Finnish sauna and a salt steamroom. Cooler experiences for contrast bathing include a cold plunge, bucket drench shower and garden showers. Secluded relaxation spaces are dotted throughout the garden.
There is a Wellbeing Terrace that is used for sunrise yoga, woodland garden meditation, sound baths and relaxation.
The spa’s dining venue called Koyo is opens out into the spa garden.
The spa has partnered with BC SoftWear for linens and Ellisons has also supplied further furniture by Gharieni. Handmade Hideaways manufactured the garden buildings and much of the furniture is bespoke.
Kurran added: “Being involved in the creation of Sakura Spa over the past two years has been an incredibly rewarding journey. From the earliest concept discussions through to seeing the final details come together, it has been a privilege to work alongside the directors and the fantastic team at Gisborough Hall to bring this vision to life. Together we’ve created a really unique spa, in keeping with the wider hotel and estate. We’ve created a place where guests can slow down, reconnect with nature and experience genuine moments of wellbeing and prepared for future expansion of the facilities and offering. I couldn’t be prouder of what we’ve achieved, and I’m excited for guests to experience everything Sakura Spa has to offer.”
Treatments
Bamford and Elemis are the skincare partners for treatments.
Elemis facials include the Elemis Touch Renew therapy, which lasts 60 minutes and costs £95, as well as the Elemis Tech Sculpt and Firm, which lasts 80 minutes and costs £135.
Bamford experiences include the B Designed Massage, which lasts 60 minutes and costs £95.
Touchless wellness experiences on the Welnamis lounger cost £30 for 30 minutes and £45 for 60 minutes.
The head spa rituals range from 30 minutes for £50 to 90 minutes for £130.
The spa is open to hotel residents, day guests and members. Day guests can book treatments and four-hour spa sessions.
