Looking for advice on what to do with this bare spot in the front yard!
When I moved here in the spring, this spot was wayyyyy overgrown with brush, ivy, and locust tree shoots. After clearing that out, there’s still some stuff that comes back occasionally because of how root-y the ground is. I have thought about reseeding with some clover, but I don’t know how well that would work given all the roots and stuff. Digging in this spot is also a mess.
Any ideas on what to do here?

Pine needles to mulch and keep weeds out? If the ground is difficult to dig in I’d just recommend putting an edge around the bed and putting down pine needles. Need to be refreshed every so often but they can make a place look really nice.
Mulch or just let the tree leaves stay there like theg would in nature for the natural mulch. Leaves serve a purpose on the ground amd aren’t just a mess like all the lawn people say
Hostas, Astilbe or Heuchera would be nice. Maybe some mulch around the tree trunk going out a foot then your plants. You can buy these cheaper by getting smaller plants if you’ve got the patience.
Let the ivy grow back.

Let leaves accumulate beneath it and plant native understory plants like Trillium and Jacobs Ladder, ferns, depending where you live.
A nice native shade ground cover would fill in nice, need no maintenance, and add some biodiversity.

More dirts & grass seed
Just top the tree and you will get tons of sunlight! Make a cool tree fort on top of the topped tree!
Native grasses and Hosta.
Early spring bulbs that will come in before the tree leafs out.
Add some varying sized potted plants to break up the area.
Mulched sitting area. Maybe a metal table and chairs painted a bright color. Or some bright Adirondack chairs & side table.
