I keep digging up huge boulders during my yard projects. Some are big enough that moving them is a project by itself.
What would you do with them? Should we build a natural retaining wall, scatter them around the landscaping, or just leave them buried when possible? I’d love to see photos of how others have reused their New England “fieldstones.”
The third picture is an adjacent properties old wall
that will remain in tact. (No walls are being destroyed)

I’m digging up a bunch also as the last owner gave up on digging out the large tree stump and apparently decided throw in boulders I’m going to probably use many of the flatter ones to shape the small pond we’re planning to add here.
Since I don’t have an excavator or any fancy rig, this is how I’ve been pulling and moving them. Towing the whole engine hoist with back of my riding mower at times.
You can probably sell them cheap also. Someone will take them.

I’m thinking a water feature in your yard like a pond or waterfall, you have the room for it. Check out a company called Aquascape for ideas.

Depending on (too) many factors….
If you have a way to lift and stack them, make it into a waterfall and ‘lazy’ pond/stream….. recirculate the water with a pump. You can add water plants and fish (koi?) if the pond is large enough.
Create a (covered?) sitting area in front of it with a fire pit for enjoying with friends and family….
Build a mountain
I’ve dug up every rock I can find to the point where I swear I’m the only person in New England who’s want for rocks. I line my property with them and used a bunch to make retaining walls and to clean up the edges of slopes in the yard. Leave no rock unused!
Sell them, or better yet get a few of the longest ones, go get a concrete saw, cut the middle flat. Turn them into benches for around a fire pit. Those benches would be around 3 G’s after if they turned out nice, you could also polish them and make them shiny like a marble cabinet or floor.

Look up how much a rock that size costs if you “want” one where they are not.

There are some beautiful walls around Napa and Sonoma built by stacking them. Now all you need is heavy machinery.

Appears they may have been a property boundary. Stacked stone walls ID property Everywhere in the New England territory. If you can move them stack what you can to give the kids something to climb on.

‘Fences make good neighbors…’ old saying in New England. Helped rebuild field stone fences when we lived in Vermont.
I’m in Atlantic Canada (basically New England) I see a lot of rock piles around the edge of fields and walls and old foundations built with stones
It’s common now for people to use them as property markers or retaining walls
I had to check which sub this was. Seriously, if you have kids (the swing set tells me you might) look into to “Crawler” RC trucks. Those rocks would make a great course to drive on. My 8 year old and I are working on a course in our back yard at the moment. Its a great hobby that will age well with him into the teenage years as a way we can bond.
Look up stream restoration companies in your area to sell them to. They use natural stone to create features in and around streams.
Build them into walls were possible or use them as features or borders in garden beds. Try to preserve that moss if you end up moving them, itll take a while to get that natural rustic character back if you rough them up alot.

It looks like you have children going by the pictures. So turn the area into a flower garden! Kids LOVE planting flower seeds, bulbs and tubers and watching them grow! Since it is pretty much August, wait another month or two and plant flowers that need fall planting. Try to stick to native flowers as much as possible. So long as they’re not invasive, don’t stress about them all being native. Just plant around the rocks. If there is a lot of gravel in the ground pick plants that do well in rock beds/gardens. Furthermore, I bet your kids would love to paint on some of those bigger rocks! ✌️💚&☺️ to all

I mean you have some good ideas as far as walls or focal points in flower beds in the yard . But something else to consider if you just want them gone is to sell them . Landscape suppliers will buy them to ship all over the country .
