COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KKTV) – The Early Bird Hike and Bike is giving people a chance to experience Garden of the Gods by letting walkers and cyclists take in the park’s roads before cars are allowed through.
The motorless event happens once a month throughout the summertime, and it’s tied to a long-running tradition at the park known as “Motorless Morning.”
The park’s Operations Administrator, Bret Tennis, said it’s an opportunity to see, and hear, the park from a different perspective.
“To experience what the park is without motor vehicles, they do bring a noise, and then the wildlife are out and they’re kind of not afraid to be out in the open as much, so it’s just another opportunity, a new way to connect to the park to different people in different ways,” said Tennis.
For some visitors, the motorless morning is a pleasant surprise, like a pair of siblings visiting from Illinois who didn’t realize they had arrived during a special time.
“Not at all, it is amazing though,” Marissa Windsor, one of the hikers, said.
“New news to me,” Marissa’s brother, Devin Windsor, said.
They said the event is a good idea, especially because it creates a safer window for on-foot exploring.
For others who live in Colorado Springs, like an avid biker named Melanie, the early bird hours are already a regular on the calendar.
“Every Wednesday when they have it and the beginning and end of the year when they have the longer ones. I just love it, I try to come every time I can,” Melanie said.
If you missed July’s motorless period, the last one this summer is coming up on Aug. 26.
