The Logan County Master Gardener Volunteers planted the newest tree on the Logan County Courthouse lawn Monday evening.
Joining the volunteers were Logan County Commissioners Mike Yoder and Joe Antram, who helped plant a Swamp White Oak near the corner of Court Avenue and Opera Street.
Also participating were Cheryl Elkins, Tonya Ray, Karen Feltham, Jody Brown, Kari Thompson, and Sally Moldas.
After planting the tree, the group spread mulch around its base to help retain moisture and protect the young oak.
The Master Gardener Volunteers will continue caring for the tree as it becomes established.
The Logan County Master Gardener Volunteers are trained through The Ohio State University Extension Office.
Although Extension Educator Jacob King was unable to attend, he shared a statement about the project.
“I am just thankful for everyone’s participation in the planting and that I hope this tree gets to see America 500! May our people enjoy its shade for decades into the future! Swamp white oak (Quercus bicolor) was our choice in the end due to its adaptability in both wet and dry conditions while maintaining a desirable shape and long lifespan.”
