We recently had a family member put in a retaining wall for us. It did not go as far out as we originally wanted, so we brought out some contractors for quotes to extend it.
They brought up that the blocks were filled with sand, there is no anchor. The family member only used sand inside the blocks and just backfilled with dirt.
I did some research and it says they need to be filled with rocks, some of the sand has washed away already. How long will these hold up before we start to have issues, or is it okay they only used sand?

This might be a confusing perspective, but if it is as far away from the house as it looks, I don’t think there will be much of an issue even if it does collapse. Were you told you needed a retaining wall?
Redo the whole project. The wall will fall over from hydrostatic pressure before you know it. Do it now or do it later, either way it’s gonna happen. Blocks should be filled with 3/4 clean stone, same with the backfill behind the wall.
