Just because it looks like a garden pea doesn’t mean it’s safe to eat!
In this Backyard Farmer Garden Minute, Kim Todd explains the differences between perennial sweet pea (Lathyrus latifolius) and edible garden peas. While this vigorous flowering vine produces attractive pea-like pods, its seeds are toxic if eaten and should never be mistaken for edible peas.
Kim also shares why perennial sweet pea is a favorite landscape vine. It grows rapidly each season, climbs fences and trellises with ease, produces beautiful blooms, and returns year after year. However, because it spreads readily and can live for many years, it’s important to plant it in the right location—especially where children or the public won’t mistake the seed pods for edible peas.
