Am I the only one wooed by apple trees?
The Saga of the primary double apple tree has hit the final chapter. She is finally dying for real after the vicious bunny attack of the winter of 2022-23. You’ve likely never heard this, but bunnies also murdered my peach tree. That dying apple tree is Honey Crisp and Sweet Sixteen. Last year, 2025, that tree gave us the most apples as she ever has, as awfully damaged as she is. It felt like a last hurrah.
Anticipating her death, and assuming it would be quicker, I was gifted a second double apple tree, Honey Crisp and Cortland, back in 2023. A Mother’s Day gift from the world’s most patient and observant children. Mysteriously, they knew a new apple tree was needed.
In a completely unrelated note, I still haven’t stopped talking about it.

We are unsure what we are going to do with the old tree. I love the idea of another perch for birds, created by girdling the tree at the base. Deeper than bunnies did, this will truly kill it quicker. Not sure my neighbors would appreciate another dead tree in the yard.
We could cut it down and leave a stump, like we did with the peach tree. That stump is a lovely home for mushrooms and it quite photogenic.
