I've bought crowns before but they just never took. This year is the first time I've planted crowns and they actually started sprouting. I'm fully aware you're supposed to basically leave them be for the first two years and maybe only grab a few that make it to pencil width in year two.
My main question is since I planted crowns are these technically in year two? I wasn't expecting asparagus this thick the first year I planted crowns. Will next year be a harvestable year?

I’d leave them. Our crowns sprouted the first year, but the thick stems didn’t happen until later. We’re heading towards year three and very excited to actually eat some.
Still don’t take any the first year. Very few the second year and never after July 1.
