The new garden railroad is starting to take shape! In Part 2 of The Oasis garden railroad build, we continue transforming the backyard, work out more of the new track layout, and start planning one of my favorite parts of the project—an automated G scale trolley controlled with an Arduino!

There’s still plenty of digging, landscaping, track planning, and general backyard chaos ahead, but the plan is coming together. We’ll look at where the railroad will go, how the trolley line fits into the layout, and some of the ideas I have for eventually using Arduino electronics to control the trolley automatically.

The long-term plan includes an automated trolley, sensors, stops, lights, sounds, crossing signals, and plenty of other unnecessary complications—which, naturally, means we absolutely have to build it.

This is Part 2 of the new Oasis Garden Railroad project, so follow along as a corner of the backyard slowly turns into a miniature railroad and garden.

  1. Most big engines will run on a 6 to 8 foot diameter turn. However I love the small trains like yours! My preference is to add sounds and lights. Great video Benny!

  2. All of the locomotives I run on my layout/channel can do the 4ft diameter curves. You'd be surprised how many options you have.
