From delicate coral and soft blush to bold cerise, shades of pink bring an uplifting energy to summer spaces that few other colors can rival. Joanna Gaines understands the appeal of this versatile hue. The interior designer and star of the acclaimed HGTV series Fixer Upper has long embraced the warmth and charm of pink, proving that the color can feel sophisticated, timeless, and surprisingly easy to decorate with.

Inviting, joyful, and effortless to style, pink has moved beyond its traditional associations and is now being embraced as an interiors neutral. As the shade continues to climb the paint charts, it’s time to leave any outdated assumptions about pink behind.

Bright, refreshing, and full of personality, pink is the perfect choice when you want to bring a sense of happiness into your home – or, as Joanna Gaines has shown, your patio garden. Over the past few years, the color has experienced a major revival, appearing everywhere from restaurants and retail spaces to modern interiors and outdoor areas. While color trends naturally evolve, pink’s continued popularity suggests this is more than a fleeting moment.

‘There is something innately romantic about decorating with pink in the garden,’ says Gaines. ‘Choosing a hue that feels timeless, rather than trendy, can transform any space, even an outdoor one. Pair it with white for a sweet, summery feel.’

Eleanor Richardson, Color Editor at Homes & Gardens, agrees that pink’s appeal lies in its ability to create warmth without overwhelming a space. ‘Pink has become one of the most adaptable colors in design because it can shift from soft and calming to bold and energizing depending on the shade. In a garden setting, it creates a welcoming atmosphere that feels both nostalgic and beautifully modern.’

The versatility of pink is undeniable, making it a natural fit for almost any interior or exterior style – from traditional cottage gardens to contemporary outdoor spaces. It may not be the most obvious choice for a patio, but a rose-tinted garden is quickly becoming a sought-after design feature.

In Joanna Gaines’ outdoor space, a pink-and-red-trimmed parasol takes center stage, while coordinating seat cushions add a harmonious layer of warmth and charm. The Yanisa Umbrella by Business and Pleasure Co. from Wayfair is a near-identical match.

Color can also be introduced through planting, and Joanna Gaines has used roses to bring subtle variations of pink throughout her garden. A selection of delicate blooms from Heirloom Roses creates a refined yet romantic palette, while climbing varieties such as ‘The Impressionist’ and ‘New Dawn’ trail beautifully along the walls, adding height, movement, and texture to the space.

Moving beyond her signature palette of creams and whites, Joanna Gaines has also incorporated shades of pink and apricot through roses including ‘Apricots and Cream,’ ‘Amazing Grace,’ and ‘Polka,’ creating a garden that feels layered, elegant, and full of seasonal interest.

Robin Jennings of Heirloom Roses says: ‘There are so many varieties of roses to choose from beyond the usual Hybrid Tea varieties from Amazon that your grandmother likely grew. Adding clustering roses such as Floribundas or Grandifloras in shades of peach and pink will give gardeners in all zones a modern splash of color with the benefit of delicious fragrance.’

Roses also offer incredible flexibility in the garden, with varieties ranging from compact three-foot shrubs to dramatic 20-foot climbers. ‘If I could only plant one type of rose,’ says Robin Jennings, ‘I would choose a Floribunda like Parfuma Earth Angel from Walmart, which is easy to grow and offers the most blooms and fragrance from a single plant.’

Many modern roses will bloom continuously throughout summer or produce multiple flushes of flowers during the growing season. With intricate petal patterns, captivating fragrance, and strong roots that provide beauty for years to come, it’s easy to see why roses remain a favorite among gardeners across the United States – especially when planted in romantic shades of pink.
