DERBY- The community garden growing behind the Dailey Memorial Library is lush with colors, primarily green and different shades of purple, mixed with colorful flowers. Sue Lucas and a group of half a dozen volunteers maintain the garden, providing fresh vegetables to the community.

The variety of vegetables is impressive; tomatoes, kale, chard, squash, pumpkins, peas, cucumbers, turnips, corn, cabbage, and more. Plus blueberries, raspberries, thornless raspberries, honey berries, josta berries, and mulberries.

Kyle Albee of Charleston has been a good source for fruit and nut trees, which have been planted contiguous to the property line. There are peach, pear, and apple trees, and a variety of nut trees.

“We like to see the elderly come here; they can’t always buy the vegetables in the store,” Lucas said. The volunteers have received permission to locate a refrigerator next to the ice cream stand at the Derby common. This will enable people to pick up fresh vegetables based on their schedules.

“We have food to give away, and people can add their excess harvest as well,” Lucas said.
