I hope you didn’t spend too much. There isn’t much to work with. Inverse taper, large unsightly root coming out of the trunk and no development whatsoever. Not trying to be a hater but you would have been better off starting with nursery stock. That being said, if you are happy with what you have, enjoy it.

25+ years ago, my father tried taking care of an entire tree(non bonsai), but there was not enough shade. He’s always loved them so we just had to try again.
I saw this tree a few days ago and decided to do a marathon study session on the maples. I cleared out an entire area of my yard JUST for this baby.
It was originally a cutting, so the exact species is unknown. It’s been growing for a few years at the nursery. I checked it for spider mites, but I didn’t see anything, even though some leaves look suspect. I’ll probably apply some insecticidal soap with a brush later in the week.
Tomorrow a shade cloth arrives, so it should knock down the light levels a bit more.
Enjoy it! There’s always some room to grow. And you can eventually air layer it!

I disagree with the others thus far; I think it has great potential! With that spiraling branch to the left, you could carve up the bulge at the top for some lovely deadwood anchoring a crazy windswept style!
