WINTER GARDEN, Fla. — Ten-year-old soccer player Lorenzo Rodriguez will play internationally this summer as Stars Academy’s 11-and-under team in Winter Garden travels to Paris for a tournament.
“It, like, clears my mind off of everything, and it’s like, really fun. I get to play with my friends while I’m doing it,” said Rodriguez, who started playing soccer at age 5.
The left wing has won back-to-back Most Valuable Player honors for his team.
Before the trip to Paris, he trained with his skills coach, Dane Bernard.
“He’s having a lot of fun, especially the fact that he’s seeing the results,” Bernard said. “A lot of it has to do with the foundation that was set at Stars Academy. He’s been working hard, and he continues to work hard, which is good.”
Rodriguez’s time in Europe will continue after the Paris tournament. He was also asked to play with another academy team from Jacksonville, and his trip abroad will span 24 days.
“I hope to go pro and play with Barcelona and play with USA to the national team to win a World Cup,” Rodriguez said.
When Rodriguez returns to Central Florida, Bernard said his focus will remain on his technical development.
“He’s going to keep working on this technical development. He’s going to keep working and getting stronger and faster. And we’re going to pray for the best,” Bernard said.
