Monty Don has shared practical advice for gardeners facing hot, dry weather.
The gardening broadcaster offered his guidance as much of the UK has recently experienced temperatures nearing 30°C.
The resulting dry conditions have left soil and gardens parched.
Speaking on the BBC Gardeners’ World Magazine Podcast, Mr Don emphasised the importance of focusing on soil health rather than simply watering plants.
He said: “It always helps if you get your soil in good health.
“If you have soil that is full of organic matter, and therefore becomes loam, it will retain moisture and that’s really the secret of watering plants.
“Your plants should not be dependent upon you giving them water.”
He explained that most plants draw moisture from the soil, making soil quality more important than surface watering.
Mr Don has previously advised that the best time to water container plants is early in the morning, before the sun heats up.
If this isn’t possible, he suggests waiting until the evening once temperatures have dropped.

In the same podcast, Mr Don reflected on the changing patterns of the UK’s climate and the wider implications of rising temperatures and soil health.
He said: “What we used to think of as extreme, we increasingly consider as normal.
“What is particularly concerning is how temperature extremes are being affected, as these cause the greatest impacts – a pattern we’ve seen again in 2026 so far.
“Every year is adding to the body of evidence showing climate change in the UK.
“We are right now living in a time of historic and unprecedented change.”
