I’m curious what y’all’s thoughts are on the ethics of collecting moss that has been torn up like this. I don’t know if the right thing to do is go grab it before it dries out or let it decompose into the ecosystem.

Eh. I always leave the areas I find better than I left it. If I’m hiking I take a bottle of RO water. Collect some, water some, pick up trash, maintain a trail by pruning or moving some rocks.
Nature is a balance and humans mess up so often. Better to err on the side of caution and habitat build. I’m this case, is likely divide, water, and collect.

Take it. If it still feels bad, split it and replant half.
