I always take an old plant stake and stick in the pocket I plant first on the greenstalk, otherwise I'd forget where I started, too. 😅
I have become so overrun by ground squirrels that I can only grow tomatoes and peppers on a table that they cannot climb. I would need to put a green stalk inside some sort of prison to protect the plants.
Greenstalks are awesome. Lettuce is also one of the easiest things to grow indoors hydroponically (aerogarden, ect).
They already figured out what farm it came from.
Thank goodness I started growing my own veggies a few years ago. A few weeks ago I intentionally started 20 extra lettuce plant seedlings indoors. I’m single but I’m hoping I can grow enough head lettuce to share with my family to help them out in some meaningful way!
I haven't bought lettuce in years. Its a member of the same plant family that ragweed is and it grows like a ragweed. I prefer head lettuce to leaf lettuce which is why I grow butter crunch. Its a mini-head lettuce. Its ready to harvest 21 days after the initial leaves come up and its ridiculously easy to grow hydroponically in the house in the winter. Once a week I harvest whats ready, empty the water from that tub, move seedlings from the starting tray to the harvested container, put new water in, plant new seeds in the seed tray, add nutrients to all the tubs and water to the other 2 tubs and done. The lettuce I harvest this way lasts a week in the fridge if I leave the roots on. There are more than 500 seeds in a pack and a 10 pound box of nutrients costs $15.

my understanding is that lettuce seeds don't sprout when temps are over 80 f. So I scattered 3 different kinds inside this week. It will be awhile but eventually I will get lettuce. Sacramento is way too hot for lettuce outside anyway, right now.

The parasite comes from the sewage treatment plants that they’re allowed to spray onto vegetables and use as fertilizer. It is gross.

I do not trust ANYTHING marked organic. I believe it’s the same as regular items just labeled as organic so they can jack up the price. I just don’t trust corporations in this country anymore. They don’t give a damn about poisoning us for the sake of them making money. That’s why I grow my own stuff. Any extras I have I give to friends and family or freeze it.

I have MAJOR problems growing lettuce. I'm sure I'm not doing it right, but where we are – lettuce in the summer has to be grown indoors with a heat index of 110°F outdoors. I have a huge indoor growing system, but we still have issues growing the right head of lettuce. But for those people who get it right the first time & always make it work – I am happy for you!!! I just wish I could figure out how to make it work here.
Lettuce is hard to grow here, but i still prefer my lettuce over store lettuce. Nice greenstalk Brian
