Powdery mildew can seem like it appears overnight. One day your squash, cucumbers, pumpkins, or zucchini look perfectly healthy… and the next they’re covered in white powder.

The good news? It doesn’t always mean your plant is beyond saving.

In this video, I’ll show you how to identify powdery mildew, what causes it, and the methods I’ve used successfully to stop it from spreading. I’ll also share five simple home remedies you may already have on hand, plus a few tips to help prevent it from coming back.

Whether you’re seeing the first signs or wondering if it’s already too late, this video will help you take the right next step.

  1. Thank you for giving us the information to help with our gardening. God bless you ๐Ÿ’–

  2. Bee Balm and squash always but not too bad yet This year my black eyed Susan leaves are covered! We are very dry here in the south Okanagan in Canada this year!

  3. I want to know what exactly you use to keep them growing like that! Looks very stable and I need them!

  4. Would be interested if anyone in the comments have actually found neem oil works for powdery mildrew… We havent had any success with it and for melons it tends to burn them. Also couldn't get milk or baking soda to work. ๐Ÿ™

  5. Perfect timing, since I found signs of powdery mildew last night. Your video is a reminder of what I need to do after work today!

  6. prevention is best medicine. To prevent, dont water foliage if at all possible and always water at a time your foliage can dry off before going into nightfall. Best to water in the evening on breezy days , but make sure whatever you do you dont put your vines up wet at night!!

  7. Oils clog the plants stomata I have been using The Amazing Dr Zymes for over 7 years now and unless they quit selling it I will keep using.

If you have never heard of it take a peak at the website. I am not affiliated with them in any way so I can't offer any discounts. I typically can find it at the grow stores in my area.

  8. Can't stand the smell of Neem Oil, I use vinegar and baking soda mixed and I quit cutting stuff off any plants. We get fog almost daily throughout the entire growing season here, if you cut, the bugs attack that fresh wound immediately. I just leave my plant's alone.

  9. You grow cucs vertically. I have a bush variety this year. I have them caged to keep them off the ground. Do you have other ideas?

  10. As an extensive Neem Oil user, you want Cold Pressed Neem Oil. I like to use faucet hot water in the solution, definitely follow the instructions(do not be scared to use the โ€œheavy infestationโ€ solution)
Neem Oil will absolutely, 100% kill beneficial insects, however most beneficial insects are not landing on the leaves and stems; where you spray.
Best to spray when flowers are closed because if you get Neem in there and a bee comes into contact, it is dead

  11. I really don't like neem oil. Its stinks and you have to wash the fruits thoroughly after you pick. I have always used olive oil and unscented dish washing detergent or better a high quality plant based (instead of petroleum based) shampoo (sodium laureth sulfate which is an organic detergent). I also make sure it is unscented . A tablespoon of each in a gallon of water (I have a 2 gallon sprayer) and I spray in the evenings at sun down. My bush beans are most at risk from powdery mildew so I start spraying this mixture every 2 weeks beginning a week after my transplants have recovered from transplant shock which is also about the time my beans have four leaves. This mixture prevents and also stops powdery mildew and is effective against aphids, earwigs, and other soft bodied insects. On the off weeks I spray aspirin solution on my nightshades and bush beans which boosts their immune systems. The combination is all most 100% effective at stopping powdery mildew before it starts. Also I don't just throw away mildewed leaves. The leaves go in a chimenea with a vent screen and under a few charcoal briquettes and I burn them immediately well away from my growing space. After I have handled mildewed leaves I use an alcohol based hand sanitizer to kill the spores and I make sure mildewed leaf removal is the last task for the garden that day to eliminate human caused accidental spread.

  12. I use neem oil on my crepe myrtle trees as I get powdery mildew every year, I am told that the spores stay in the ground for years. How can I get rid of the spores????

  13. Advice from an arid climate doesnโ€™t always translate to humid climates. If neem were truly the best cure for powdery mildew, commercial growers and university extension programs would be recommending it over potassium bicarbonate and sulfur, but they do not!

  14. ๐Ÿ™‹โ€โ™€๏ธ ME! Lol, I sure hope I don't jinx myself here… I'm 90 miles north of you, and I never get powdery mildew! I don't know why. I'm an avid gardener, so I stay on top of things, but never have to deal with PM. It is a bit windy up here, so I'm wondering if my plants just dry too quickly for it to start? Let me also add that all of my garden gets a shower every day during the hot months to prevent spider mites (those had been my nemesis until I started "bathing" my plants. ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™€๏ธ
