With the warm weather showing no signs of letting up, you’d be forgiven for thinking there’s little point in growing anything in the garden during the July heat. However, according to one horticultural expert, there are actually three plants that require no watering throughout the summer months – and can in fact flourish even as temperatures soar.
Adam Kirtland, who goes by the name View From The Potting Bench on social media, took to TikTok to share his top tips. “You can get them in a garden centre right now,” he said in a video. “The sun really is shining in our gardens at the moment, but with that sun comes a lot of watering. But if you want to stop watering and start enjoying your plants – get these three!”
Lavender
Adam began with an “absolute classic” – a plant he described as a “must-have” in any garden. “We all know about lavender, but this is one plant we all need,” he explained.
Equally striking in a small or large pot to begin with, the pale purple plant can subsequently be moved to a flowerbed when needed. “It likes a dry, free-draining compost and loves full sun,” Adam added.
Echinacea
Next on Adam’s list is one of his all-time favourites. “It comes in a wide range of colours,” he continued, before revealing he had recently chosen a pink variety.
Also known as Coneflower, the Echinacea is beloved by pollinators “from bud to flower to dried seed head”. Adam added: “This is a flower that looks amazing all year round.”
Agapanthus
Rounding off his top three is a plant Adam said he has “saved the best for last” – the “beautiful” Agapanthus. “Whether you have a small garden or sprawling estate, this is plant for you,” he declared.
Adam proceeded to highlight the “trick” for cultivating the plant, which is to grow several rather than just one. “Then repeat it throughout your garden,” he advised. “It has amazing root systems, which means it is perfect for dividing and splitting in your garden.”
Naturally, gardeners aren’t restricted to these three as Adam concluded: “Garden centres are full of flowers like this to keep your garden bursting with colour all summer long.”
The RHS is likewise a champion for lavender, meanwhile. Their summer guidance states online: “The shrubs that flower at this time shrubs are numerous and varied, with many different flower colours, foliage types and styles of growth. Many are sun-lovers from warmer climes like cistus and lavender, although there are plenty for all garden situations.”
They add: “One of the most popular summer-flowering shrubs is the hydrangea, and these plants can also be a useful indicator of your soil type. With most hydrangeas, if the blooms are blue, then your soil is acidic, and if they are pink, then it is alkaline.
“You can assist blue hydrangeas to retain their colour, by adding aluminium products to the soil, which are available from garden centres for this purpose.”
