NEW WILMINGTON, PA. – New Wilmington Garden hosted a contest to celebrate America’s 250th birthday through gardening on July 6.

The New Wilmington Garden Club hosted New Wilmington Blooms Red, White and Blue, featuring two cash-prize contest categories: Patriotic Blooms and Victory Vegetable Gardens.

Three judges viewed contestants’ gardens, based on the use of red, white, and blue plantings, flags, and other patriotic-themed elements.

The judges of the contests were Garden Club President Cindy Lyons, Lawrence County Master Gardener Sandy Baumgardner, and Rob McHale, National Sales Manager at Michell’s, a wholesale horticultural distributor.

Each contestant displayed their unique interests and creativity in their gardens.

Sue Goodwin took first place in the Patriotic Blooms category for her window boxes. Jason Maggi won runner-up for his unique container gardens, and third prize went to Terry and Janet Robb for well-tended red, white, and blue blooms all around their home.

For the Victory Vegetable Garden category, first prize went to Mark Prestein. His garden grew a wide variety of vegetables and herbs and featured thematic elements. Second prize went to Bob Hudock for very lush vegetables and herbs, and third prize went to Jessica Sarver with a focal point of a huge tree stump with pumpkin vines spilling out of it.

Founded in 1935, the New Wilmington Garden Club (NWGC) encourages interest in gardening, learning about nature, and conservation and assisting in beautification of the borough.
