New Trees and planted area almost finished on Patrick Street
There are some major public realm works on Patrick Street right now that are about to bloom in time for what should be a sunny weekend in town.
The pilot scheme to introduce more plants, trees and green spaces to Munster’s biggest and widest shopping street is really coming together, with a very positive new look for the wide plaza outside the Brown Thomas department building. As part of the scheme, a bus stop has been demolished and that’s seen changes in bus stops and timetables, which you can find here.
Just next door, the works on the facade and interior of the Roches Stores building have jumped into a higher gear this week, promising a better future for the street that has struggled with changing shopping trends, online competition and empty buildings in recent years.
The changes to the area by BT’s also means there may be no room for the controversial Funky Leprechauns, whose hour-long performances with high-volume loudspeakers have seen one City Councillor say he has been deluged with complaints from shoppers and businesses, after years of extremely loud pop music played for hours every weekend.
In place of Michael Jackson songs being blasted at shoppers and shop workers, there will now be a more peaceful oasis of greenery, with staff from Cork’s famous Pavilion Garden Centre putting in a wide variety of trees and plants into a specially designed raised bed.
The hope now is that the newly planted area will not be hit by vandals, after recent incidents of mindless destruction of nearby trees by the Mary Eames bridge.
A man in his 30s has been arrested in connection with the vandalism case – it’s understood that Gardai and Cork city’s public wardens will be keeping a very close eye on the newly planted areas on Patrick Street.
