The LaRue County 4-H Gardening Club is open to youth ages 5 to 18 and meets monthly on the second Tuesday at 5 p.m. Marcy Ward is the 4-H volunteer who leads the club and offers a wide variety of educational opportunities for the club members. She has been leading the club since 2018.
In the 4-H pledge, members pledge their hands to larger service. Club leader Marcy Ward works to provide opportunities for the club to be involved in community projects. Currently, the club has pollinator gardens at the Hodgenville Post Office and the LaRue County Extension Office, which the club maintains.
The club has applied for and received grants from the Kentucky 4-H Foundation to provide materials and supplies for projects such as the current small garden area at the Extension Office which includes a raised beds and a tomato tower. The club is currently growing watermelon, cucumbers, green beans, squash, zucchini, tomatoes, sunflowers, zinnias, basil, thyme, and oregano.
4-H Gardening Club member Annabelle Davis says, “I love the gardening club because it is always something new at each meeting, and I have learned so much about plants and their uses. I also enjoy and look forward to entering my gardening projects in the county and state fairs every year.”
The 4-H Gardening Club participates in the trash for cash program annually to help raise funds for the club’s projects. They also plan field trips which in the past has included going to Yew Dell Botanical Gardens. The 4-H Gardening Club has also participated in the Light Up LaRue events and made and sold nature and dough ornaments to help support the club and to be involved in community activities.
Gardening Club member Penelope Ford says, “Everyone should sign up for the gardening club and try it out. Marcy is the best gardener and teacher and she makes gardening fun.”
