The WV State Garden Club President Pam Simien asked the garden clubs in the state to create flower arrangements in their communities to commemorate the 250th birthday of our country. The five Berkeley County clubs agreed and responded by sending one or two representatives to one of several planning sessions where decisions were made on the location, style of the arrangements and a budget to complete the project. It was decided that the plants would be most noticeable in front of the Martinsburg-Berkeley County Public Library which is located in the town’s square.
Through a very generous grant by the Shenandoah-Potomac Garden Council, the clubs were able to not only do the work at the main library but also the outlying libraries in Hedgesville, Spring Mills and Musselman. In the long planting bed that stretches across the front of the Martinsburg Library, several old shrubs were removed and fresh topsoil and new native shrubs were added Three large pots were tucked between the shrubs and beautifully planted with red, white and blue flowers and grasses. Patriotic festoon banners were hung between the four columns of the building and above the pots. Smaller pots were planted at the outlying libraries. The planting vessels and the banners will be donated to the libraries after the summer growing season ends.
This project is one example of the numerous projects done by the local clubs in Berkeley and Jefferson counties that are funded from the ticket sales to the annual House and Garden Tour in April of each year.
