A former downtown landfill is getting a major cleanup boost. Waterfront Botanical Gardens received a $4 million EPA Brownfields Cleanup grant.The money will help get more land on the north side of the gardens ready for use.Crews will bring in clean soil to make room for future planted beds, meadows, walking paths, even an event lawn. This will allow the Gardens to turn an old dump into a usable green space. “Being able to once again just get a bunch of real clean soil and bring it to the site is huge for us,” Andrew Hagerty, Director of Horticulture and Facilities, said, “it’s going to give us the opportunity to develop even more acres.” Work is expected to start in 2026.
