Appearing on the latest episode of Sunday Brunch (July 5), he spoke with Tim Lovejoy and Simon Rimmer about his new podcast with Caitlin Moran. However, during their appearance, Tim mentioned that Adam has a hatred towards outdoor chess boards, as the BBC star agreed.
He replied: “The massive, plastic chess sets. You go to a hotel, or even people put them in their garden!
“They pave a huge area, and they have these plastic chess pieces that slowly change colour. Really, kids just use them to attack each other.
“If you want to play chess in your garden, buy a board, a set, take it out into the garden around a table with a nice drink. Civilised. Don’t do that plastic, no.”
Although Tim highlighted that it’s an ‘immersive experience’ having the pieces extremely large, Adam was quick to disagree.
He added: “That’s not immersive! How is that immersive? No. It’s a complete and utter waste of space.”
As swimmer Mark Foster asked if it could look like a piece of artwork in a garden, Adam was baffled by the suggestion.
The Gardeners’ World star continued: “I can remember, first doing a landscape job very early on when I had a small landscape company and someone wanted me to lay a checkerboard paving pattern in their back garden. I refused, very politely. I just couldn’t do it. It’s just a no.”
This comes after Adam opened up about the bittersweet experience of moving house, which happened at the end of last year.
Recently, the BBC star took a moment to go back to his former adobe, which is now owned by a new couple.
Adam detailed the mixed emotions of leaving a much-loved garden behind as he said: “ I walked around with them [the new couple] and they are absolutely loving it.
“And I think that’s a great thing to hold on to, is the fact that maybe you’ve just left somebody else a whole load of joy.”
