VINTON — The July Blue Ribbon Yard winner is the home of Barb and Darren Franzenburg located at 1316 F Avenue. Be sure to also view the property from 14th Street. They have created a lovely setting for their corner lot home by surrounding it with many beautiful plants and some carefully placed family antiques. Barb gets to claim the ideas, plans, and plantings, but she often enlists Darren’s skill to create things that need to be built. Barb also gives her mother credit for her love of plants and her green thumb.
Two very old water pumps, a potbellied stove, and several old washtubs add color and interest to the plantings which circle the foundation. There are many shades of green, and plants of many heights, shapes, and textures. Notice the figurine on the steps, and the welcome sign beside the door. It is also a good idea to view the property from 14th Street side. This provides a view of their colorful garage plantings and the cozy outside patio, which features more plants, an antique pot belly stove, and an antique pump fountain. It all fits in with the black trim they have used on their home. “I love making things pretty.” is how Barb expresses her love of gardening. The proof is all around her.
The Cottage Garden Society members enjoy honoring Vinton residents for making that extra effort to beautify our city. The club awards the “Blue Ribbon Yard” five months each year, May through September. If you would like to suggest a beautiful yard that one of the monthly committees should consider, please leave a message with club president, Brenda, at 560-9057.
