Has anyone gotten married at Madison Square Garden before?

The venue is best known for hosting Knicks and Rangers games, sold-out concerts and other events. But if rumors about Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce are true, a wedding at “The World’s Most Famous Arena” may not be as unusual as it sounds.

As a matter of fact, Madison Square Garden has a something of a history with hosting weddings.

While the arena can hold more than 19,000 people, some couples have chosen the iconic venue to exchange vows in front of crowds that rival championship games and concerts.

Sly Stone and Kathy Silva, 1974

The first wedding believed to be held at Madison Square Garden took place on June 5, 1974, when Sly Stone, frontman of the funk band Sly and the Family Stone, married actress and model Kathy Silva during his concert.

According to an article in the New Yorker, Stone needed a unique idea to bring in sales when his album numbers had been low. He thought, why not have his wedding at one of his concerts? That way fans will be inclined to purchase tickets not only to see a performance, but also to see his ceremony.

His idea worked. More than 20,000 people attended, including fans, family, friends, and celebrities.

The marriage was short-lived. Stone and Silva divorced two years later in 1976, but the ceremony still remains one of the most memorable nights, and the first wedding held at the Garden.

The Unification Church’s mass wedding, 1982

In June 1982, The Unification Church, known for its mass wedding ceremonies, held one of their ceremonies in Madison Square Garden where over 2,000 couples walked down the aisle.

The Unification Church was founded in South Korea in 1954. The church’s core belief is that the founder, Sun Myung Moon, was chosen by Jesus Christ to complete the mission of establishing a sin-free family on Earth. Followers of the church, known as “Moonies”, seek peace through the concept of “True Parents.” And one of the church’s most recognizable traditions, mass wedding ceremonies, seeks to build a unified and larger global community.

On the wedding day, 2,075 couples were paired up up by the leader, Sun Myung Moon, and tied the knot. Most of these couples had never met before, had no common language, and could only speak to each other through an interpreter. In order to get married, brides and grooms needed to be a member of the church for at least three years before and had to practice chastity.

More than 6,000 guests attended, including family, friends and invited guests.

Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce, rumored for July 2026

There is no official confirmation of a set wedding at Madison Square Garden, but if rumors are true, a Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce ceremony would mark the third time Madison Square Garden has held a wedding.

The couple is expected to tie the knot heading into the July Fourth weekend, with a smaller rehearsal scheduled for July 2 and a larger celebration with about 1,100 guests on July 3. That would be far smaller than previous weddings held at the Garden before.

Several artists are rumored to perform at the ceremony. One of them being Stevie Knicks, the front woman of Fleetwood Mac and long-time friend of Swift. Tim McGraw is also rumored to be among the acts performing.

Whether Swift and Kelce have their wedding at the Garden this weekend or not, one thing is certain. MSG is more than an arena; it’s an iconic landmark where any modern “Love Story” can be found, making it feel “Actually Romantic” to many.
