Have you ever tasted a sparkleberry? 🫐🌳

This native blueberry relative can grow 10–20 feet tall and is one of the tallest members of the blueberry genus. It thrives in acidic soils, tolerates heat, drought, sandy soils, and even partial shade better than many cultivated blueberries.

The berries are small and edible, though they’re quite different from the blueberries you’d find at the grocery store. As a bonus, sparkleberry has even been used as rootstock to help cultivated blueberries grow in tougher conditions.

A big thank you to Roots & Shoots Nursery in Charleston, South Carolina, for letting me feature this unique native plant! 🌿

  1. These are common in coastal NC. Largely mealy, dry, and not very flavorful from my experience. Have always wished somebody would breed these for flavor.
