There are two vine/tree like weeds in my flower bed. They grow exceptionally fast are extremely difficult to pull when left too long. What are they and how can I get rid of them?

I am located in Central Illinois. Zone 6b

First is tulip tree, second is red bud. Both are native trees.

Those are both highly desirable native tree seedlings. The first is tuliptree and the second is eastern redbud. Both will bear gorgeous flowers when older

Most young woody weeds are easiest to cut a bit below the soil line with hand pruners. If you can get close enough to the roots they won’t be able to sprout again and will just die. This only fully works for species that can not root sucker.

Pre-emergent herbicides are probably your best bet long term. Both Tulip Poplar and Redbud are extremely prolific seeders, and a preemergent will kill them as they germinate. Pounce on them fast. I’ve got a few Tulip Poplar seedlings on my property that I ignored for 3 years and they’re already 15′ tall. So instead of pulling them I’ll end up cutting them with a handsaw and painting the stumps with herbicide.

Unfortunately there are several tulip poplar just outside my property line serving as an endless seed bank, so I understand your frustration. I cut down several when I first moved in because they have the unfortunate combination of being fast/large growers with extremely weak wood prone to breakage.

When I lived in the DMV we would get tulip tree saplings popping up everywhere, even from the concrete cracks, like dandelions! Had to constantly pulled them out as they can destroy side walks. Now I am in the Midwest and the local nursery charges $1-200 a tree.

  6. The first one is a tulip tree seedling. Ten years ago we had one that size in the yard and now it is 50 feet tall.

At first I thought that I was in the Find The Sniper sub.
