This was a special one for me.
I’ve had the chance to talk with Charles Dowding before on The joe gardener® Show Podcast, but until this trip, I had never met him in person or visited Homeacres, his market garden in Somerset, England.
During our England garden tour with Earthbound Expeditions, Charles welcomed our group to Homeacres, and we had the chance to sit down with him for a short conversation about no-dig gardening, compost, soil health, weeds, mulch, slugs and how he keeps his garden so productive with so little soil disturbance.
If you’ve followed Charles for any length of time, you know he has spent decades proving what’s possible when we stop digging and tilling and start working with the soil instead of against it. Seeing those no-dig beds in person was a real treat.
In this conversation, Charles shares:
• How he first learned about no-dig gardening
• How to start a no-dig bed with cardboard and compost
• Why you can plant into a new no-dig bed right away
• What happens when soil life is left undisturbed
• Why fungal networks, bacteria and plant roots matter
• How much compost he adds each year to keep beds productive
• Why compost serves as his mulch at Homeacres
• What he has noticed about slugs, ground beetles and pest balance
• Why no-dig gardening can mean less weeding
• Why starting small is one of the best things a gardener can do
One of the things I appreciate most about Charles’ approach is how practical it is. You don’t need a huge garden to grow a lot of food. By concentrating on compost and soil fertility, you can make your garden more productive and easier to manage.
Whether you’re brand new to no-dig (no-till) gardening or you’ve already been experimenting with compost-based beds, I think you’ll enjoy hearing Charles explain what’s happening in the soil and why this method works so well.
