LIHUE — April Christian, Louida Levinthol and Jeff Andres of Na Kupuna O Kauai Legacy of Aloha were in disbelief on Thursday when they received a HawaiiUSA Federal Credit Union Foundation award of $500 at the Kukui Grove Branch of the HawaiiUSA Federal Credit Union.
Branch Manager Karen Shigemoto said the effort is possible because Kauai has two representatives — Lorraine Ballesteros and Gretchen Toyomura — to the foundation.
Na Kupuna O Kauai Legacy of Aloha is a nonprofit organization dedicated to honor and support elders in the community.
The funding will help Na Kupuna O Kauai with its programs to help kupuna that include two major events, including the 3rd annual Walk and Roll event that was held at the end of May at Lydgate Park.
This event doubled as a fundraiser for Na Kupuna O Kauai Legacy of Aloha’s signature event, the Honoree Ceremony, a Heart of Gold, that will be held on Aug. 15 at the Kauai War Memorial Convention Hall.
Doors will open at 8:15 a.m. for the luncheon, Hawaiian Style Lu‘au, where the 2026 honorees will be celebrated.
The honorees include Kawaikapuokalani Hewitt, Alice M. Hayseldon Brown, Brenda Viado, Juliet Puanani Souza, Patrick “Skip” Caycayon, Irene Miyashiro, Carlette Ahonui Gonzales, Adaline “Dely” Sasaki, Victoria Matsuoka, Vern L. K. Kauanui, Beverly Harter and Elizabeth Betty Duarte.
Pre-sale tickets are available at www.okauailoa.com. Tickets will also be available on the day of the luau.
