It was known and loved for its Christmas displays – but what’s changed?

While usually the focus of many a visit during more festive, wintry periods, there’s a garden centre venue in Whitchurch which is still drawing in vast numbers – even in warmer months.
Otter Garden Centre, formerly Whitehall, is one of the more popular and widely known venues in and around Bristol. This is most likely due to its incredible Christmas displays and giftshop in previous years.
But it turns out that even back when it was known as Whitehall, it wasn’t just for Christmas. As one customer visiting a year ago, said: “What did we do at weekends before there were garden centres! A refrain oft heard amongst those earthy/planty types.
“But, rapidly over the years, they have developed exponentially from greenhouse venues, selling flowers, plants, bulbs and seeds. Now, some cover areas larger than a football ground parking lots.

“Whitehall is not quite that big, but has expanded significantly over the years. A large cafeteria is part of the complex an extensive range of garden fixtures and furniture that seems too good for a garden. Greetings cards in profusion, many initiating an uncontrolled guffaw.
“Own label wine, beer and preservatives by the shelf full and garden tools, as well as many other items of interest… Well worth a visit.”
How it has changed
Back in July 2025, it was announced that Otter had acquired its eighth garden centre by taking on this one in Whitchurch. It was previously one of three garden centres in the Whitehall Garden Centre business, founded by the Self family in 1970, and is now – as Otter described in a blog post to its website at the time – a ‘fourth generation family-run operation, sharing many values with Otter, which, as our customers know, is also a family-run business’.
Otter’s managing director, Jacqui Taylor, said: “We have known the Self family for many years now and have always admired their way of running an independent family business. What really appealed to us was how closely their ethos aligns with our own – family-run, customer-focused and with a strong commitment to quality and sustainability.

“Like Otter, they are known for offering exceptional plants, something we know our customers really value. We will be supplying the Whitchurch garden centre with plants from our own growing nurseries, which we are sure our new customers will love.”
Existing Whitehall team members stayed on after the takeover and, since then, one reviewer has called it “a wonderful plant paradise”, writing: “Friendly staff and good prices. Plant manager is very helpful as well.
“Great cafe for all meals or just coffee/tea. Now recently refurbished car park and interior since Otter took over (and thank goodness they did). Highly recommended.”

While a second dubs it “always a pleasure to visit” adding: “The plants are healthy and well‑priced, the layout is easy to navigate, and the staff genuinely know their stuff. The gift and homeware sections are surprisingly strong, and the café is a great bonus for a relaxed break. Consistently friendly, reliable, and beautifully kept — one of the best garden centres around.”
One major change that visitors seem to be left disappointed by is the fact that the garden centre now has a no dogs policy, except for guide dogs and assistance dogs. One reviewer a month ago said: “Very disappointed they don’t allow dogs we had to find a more forward thinking garden centre.”
The Orangery Restaurant, however, does remain and is open from 9am to 4.30pm Monday to Saturday, 10am to 4pm on Sunday. It serves up hot and cold drinks, slices of cake, and even home cooked lunches, children’s meals and lunchboxes.

Sample menus listed on the website include the likes of a Full English breakfast (including vegan and vegetarian options), sandwiches, paninis, jacket potatoes, salads, and even a traditional cream tea (£6.95) or savoury cheese tea (£8.95).
The Otter Whitchurch branch also boasts free parking and departments that sell everything from houseplants, garden furniture and BBQs, to clothing, gifts and homewares, and a cookshop. The Christmas department is open between October and the end of December and the team hints that there will be plenty of incredible new installations this year, including something hot air balloon themed.
