Experts have warned that extreme heat can be damaging to fake grass

With the UK facing a record breaking heatwave, many of us will be aware of the impacts that the heat can have on bodies and our surroundings.
However some people may be less aware of the effect the hot weather can have on gardens lined with artificial grass.
Fake grass is a popular choice in British gardens as it requires less maintenance and maintains a bright green appearance all year round, meaning gardeners can spend less time worrying about mowing and upkeeping their lawn.

But while artificial grass may seem like a convenient option, experts warn that heat can cause damage to fake lawns. Especially in the summer months when gardens see their highest footfall and are exposed to a range of activities, artificial grass can dent, stain, melt, or even tear the fibres of their synthetic lawns.
These effects can also be exasperated by a range of summer-time activities, such as using a garden paddling pool, having bikes on the turf or even applying sunscreen whilst stood on artificial grass.

Colin Potts from Artificial Grass Direct explained: “Families set up paddling pools, leave bikes on the turf, and apply sunscreen without thinking about the impact on the surface beneath them. Most of these mistakes are completely avoidable with just a little know-how.
“A paddling pool sitting in the same spot for days creates two problems, the sustained weight and suction effect can matt down the fibres, potentially permanently, and any trapped moisture underneath creates the perfect conditions for mould and bacteria to develop in the backing.
“The fix is simple, place the pool on a flat patio area instead, or lay down a purpose-made ground sheet beneath it and move it daily.”
Colin also warns that BBQs are one of the of the most common causes of irreversible artificial grass damage. He said: “Coals remain dangerously hot for hours after cooking ends, and an accidentally knocked BBQ can drop hot ash directly onto the turf.
“Even a spark landing on artificial fibres can cause scorching. Always position the BBQ on a patio slab or concrete area, and never assume the lawn is far enough away.”

With this in mind, experts from Artificial Grass Direct have suggested a range of ways to help protect fake lawns during summer.
Ways to keep artificial grass in shapeBrush the lawn with a stiff-bristled broom every two to three days to keep fibres upright after heavy footfall.Rinse with a garden hose every few days, particularly if sunscreen, food, or drink has been used in the garden.Move any heavy garden furniture to a new spot every few weeks to prevent permanent damage.Clear any leaves, food debris, or dropped items promptly to prevent staining.Keep bird feeders positioned over paved areas, seed residue and droppings can build up quickly in warm weather.
