TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) – National Pollinator Week is wrapping up this Sunday, but the celebrations aren’t over just yet.
The Shawnee County Extension Master Gardeners hosted a Make Your Own Wildflower Seed Bomb event Thursday morning, in partnership with the Topeka Zoo.
Made out of compost, topsoil, wildflower seeds, and clay, these handy crafts are an easy way to spread native plants, by just throwing the bomb into a sunny area that won’t get mowed down.
Kevin Siek, one of the program’s volunteers, says that events projects like these are vital to helping fix decreasing pollinator numbers.
“Insects, in general, their populations are in decline for a number of reasons…And so, pollinators need our help, we want to get those insect numbers back up, because they’re kind of the bottom of the food pyramid.”
Siek adds that planting native plants and reducing garden pesticides are also ways to help the pollinator population.
