Looks like *Comptonia peregrina* aka sweetfern (but it’s not a fern) super neat plant.
Native to “MA”, incredibly difficult to make germinate (though, apparently, not so difficult to make its cuttings root) and kind of endangered because of habitat loss and said difficulty with germination. Treat it well.
