This week, Ina Garten gave her Instagram followers a sneak peek of her summer garden, and needless to say, we’re totally jealous. In the photo, she showed off several enormous arched trellises, tucked away in her impressive East Hampton home’s garden. Each archway is flooded with lush green leaves and fluffy flowers, adding lots of shade to the grass walkway below.
The Flowers Ina Garten Used for Her Trellises
For each of her trellises, Garten chose either bright pink roses or white viburnum. As she says in her Instagram caption, the two pair together beautifully; the roses add a pop of color to the front of the trellis walkway, while the white viburnum produces dozens upon dozens of enormous white flowers all up and down the trellises.
The roses that Garten picked were likely damask roses; if you’re hoping to get a similar look in your garden, the Rose de Rescht sports the same color and layered petals, and climbs trellises with ease. Any climbing rose variety, however, will look beautiful on an arched trellis—especially if you opt for the luxurious pink hue that Garten chose for her own archway.

Viburnum is also a fast grower, making it a beautiful choice for a trellis feature. It can grow up to two feet per year and can bloom for a few weeks at a time. Each flower releases a sweet scent that can easily fill your entire walkway with fragrance. When not in bloom, the viburnum bush remains a beautiful trellis feature with its bright green leaves.
Generally, viburnums can be hardy in USDA zones 2–10, though different varieties may have different planting requirements. The same goes for climbing roses, which can be hardy from zones 4–11.
Take Inspiration from Garten’s Trellises
One of the best ways to incorporate a trellis into your backyard is by taking inspiration from Garten and using it to cover a section of your walkways. Garden paths are a beautiful way to help you see your favorite flowers up close, and they also guide guests to and from your garden’s features; adding a trellis turns your walkway into a striking focal point of its own.
Garten uses her trellises to cover an entire small pathway in and out of a section of her garden. This makes the flow of the yard clearer to visitors. Covering the entrance to your yard with a trellis makes your yard feel more like a secret garden, immersing you in fresh flowers and sweet fragrance as soon as you step inside. For those with small backyards, a trellis is a great way to conserve space while growing plants that produce lots of blooms. Add yours over a raised bed or section of patio to help fit it into your small garden layout.
