A morning of gardening between school children and retired residents in Knaresborough was recently held to bring together community and nature.
Fourteen Year 3 pupils from Aspin Park Academy visited Riverside Gardens for an intergenerational gardening activity alongside retired homeowners, management team members, and gardeners from Knaresborough Garden Centre.
Gillian Ward-Brown, general manager at Riverside Gardens, said: “We were delighted to welcome the children to Riverside Gardens and to spend the morning gardening together.
“The children brought so much enthusiasm and energy, and it was lovely to see them chatting with homeowners and learning from Toby and Tina.”
The session, led by professional gardeners Toby and Tina from Knaresborough Garden Centre, involved planting raised beds with vegetables, sweet peas, and other plants to create colourful summer displays.
Riverside Gardens is Adlington Retirement Living’s new retirement community, offering 61 age-exclusive apartments on Wetherby Road.
Finley Gillon from Knaresborough Garden Centre said: “We’re delighted to support this activity and help bring people together through gardening.
“As a local business, we’re always keen to support initiatives that benefit the Knaresborough community, and we’re looking forward to seeing the vegetables and flowers flourish over the summer.”
Wendy, a homeowner at Riverside Gardens who took part in the gardening activity, added: “It was lovely to spend time with the children and see how excited they were to learn about gardening.
“I’ve always enjoyed gardening, so it was wonderful to share that interest with the younger generation.”
Clare Ramsbottom, Yr 3 teacher at Aspin Park Academy, said: “It was a wonderful opportunity for the children to spend time with the homeowners and learn from people who have so much experience and knowledge to share.
“The children loved getting involved in the planting and asking questions about the flowers and vegetables. Activities like this encourage curiosity, confidence, and a love of the natural world.”
