  1. Hope I remember this! I just harvested my garlic, oops! My dill is growing in same grow bag as a bell pepper. It might get too tall and shade the bell pepper. Oh well…

  2. I started intercropping years ago when i noticed how a variety of different weeds would come up in a bare spot. So thats how i started seeding my garden though i do put things in rows.

  3. Not sure if it was mentioned; when you planted the garlic in the fall, is that when you planted the dill, or did you plant the dill in the spring?

  4. We moved to a new place last fall, so starting over. I decided to make a few new beds and left half of the existing beds to their own devices. We happened to realize last week that one of the beds has 40+ heads of garlic and we were able to get a ton of scapes. Although they aren't spaced apart well, it's still a big win. I will definitely be trying this next year.

  5. This is my first year growing garlic, and im in southern idaho… garlic is a crop they grow commercially around here among other things.

And i didnt do anything of the sort and my garlic is massive. Honestly think they might even look bigger than his just looking at the stems. I didnt cover the soil… because we get such high winds here in the spring that the mulch would just blow away. And this season its just been constant bam bam bam with the storms and the high winds and even late frosts.

I started hand watering everything in mid spring because we are also in a severe drought this year. Virtually no precipitation through the winter. The soil around here is dry dry dry. But i did a hugelkulture setup in my raised beds. Maybe that helped? They’re very tall beds. But the soil has constantly been dry at the top layer. We have particularly sandy soil in this area. Very sandy. And so you’d think my garlic wouldnt have gotten enough moisture? In fact the extras i had that i planted in pots didnt do well at all. Many of them never grew at all. So its got something to do with how i set up my raised bed.

The weed pressure in the beds have also been minimal. We pick out little baby ones all the time but other than that… its not bad compared to the surrounding area which has very very high weed pressure.

Idk im figuring the hugelkulture method has worked well for me. Because my soil is sandy af… and i didnt even fertilize in the spring and they’re looking very big. I got a mix so im just at the point where im cutting of scapes.

  6. I just tried it on a lark this year with my Brussel Sprouts. Not much cabbage worm pressure yet but I don't know if it's the dill, or birds.

  7. Bonus! One of my favorite sauces is Greek Tzatziki
yogurt, garlic, olive oil, fresh lemon and, if your lucky fresh dill !

Potatoes with butter and dill too.
I will use ALL the dill!

  8. Let that dill bolt! It will attract black swallowtail butterflies! And other pollinators.

  9. Thank you for waiting to see the results before you go crowing about it! I love that idea, especially when it comes to carrots, because they really need consistent moisture to germinate, and that looks like a win-win to me!

  10. Good idea to intercrop garlic, I'll have to remember to do this. Also, Lambsquarter is super delicious by the way, tastes like spinach when cooked.
