Chemical City Garden Club recently toured the private gardens and river fronted grounds of the home of Chuck and Beth Martin. Chuck is a retired chief horticultural specialist with Dow Gardens of Midland.

The tour of the varied and memorable gardens, containing a collection of many special plant species and native plants, was followed by dessert served by the Martins.

Chuck has provided many experiences to the Club throughout his years at Dow Gardens. Many seasoned gardeners have admired the heirloom apple tree collection that he established at Dow Gardens, among his many other contributions while there.

Chemical City Garden Club is a group of passionate gardeners who also enjoy gathering for learning and educational programs, and for friendship. The Club has flourished for over 50 years, has taken on several projects for civic beautification, and also supports community organizations with gifts, crafts, or monetary donations during the holidays.

The Club’s civic beautification projects, ongoing for many years, include care of the large flower planters and the surrounding flower beds at the Midland Post Office on Rodd Street, and care of the main Veteran’s Memorial Section at the City of Midland Cemetery, in addition to other area commemorative veterans projects.

The Club meets on the second Thursday of every month, September through June, and each member contributes a little time in the summer to the civic beautification projects as possible.

The club is welcoming new members and inviting those who wish to learn more about gardening and civic beautification, to join them for a hands-on experience this summer, on or after July 24. If interested, call or leave a message at the home office of Linda Morrison Brown, president, 989-486-9424.
