The weather has been unseasonably cold up in the mountains, and Nikki has even found herself turning on the heating at night. But between Monday and Friday, she’s expecting a heat wave to kick up that won’t be around for long, but will make itself very much felt in the garden.
These informal, unscripted vlog-style videos are a chance for the team to share some of the fun things happening in their respective gardens – and are filmed without a teleprompter in a single take.

Hey everybody, happy Sunday! I hope that wherever you are and whatever you are doing, you are safe, you are well, and that you are with people you care about who also care for you. Look at my roses — they are starting to look a little bit rough, but roses are wonderful because they continually flower at this time of year, and that always makes me smile.
So let’s have a look at what’s going on today in the garden. And the first thing I need to show you is this. Now, I do not know what’s happened here, but something large — probably our friendly deer — has come through here and created quite a stir, has knocked some of my lupines over. Luckily these lupines were on their way out anyway, but yeah, I don’t know what caused this, but it’s clearly something large, and that’s not good. So I don’t know quite what happened. I haven’t looked at the security camera footage yet, but it does look like someone’s come through and just chomped off bits of my lupin. So I’m going to suggest that was a deer. I actually have a camera right there, so I’m going to have a look on my camera and see what happened. Luckily the sunflowers didn’t get taken out by that, which is very good.
And I do need to finish planting these, because they’re not happy there. So I need to put them in, and I need to put them in really, ideally, today. I’m filming this on Tuesday. Unfortunately — well, fortunately — we’ve had some really weird weather of late. So just a couple weeks ago it was really warm and quite pleasant, and then this week — Sunday was actually dry, but Saturday was cold and wet, Monday was cold and wet, and so cold and wet that I actually ended up having to put the heating on. Someone’s been eating my strawberries. I had to put the heating on because it was so cold in the house that we had to put the heat pumps on in heat mode, which is bonkers for, like, the end of the first week of June.
But then tomorrow it’s going to suddenly start getting warm — and you can see I’m wearing, like, an outdoor jacket right now. Tomorrow it’s going to start getting warm. By the weekend it’s going to be touching 100 degrees Fahrenheit, which is well into the 30s Celsius. So I don’t really know what’s on, but I’m going to pick some of these strawberries before they are eaten by people. It looks like someone is already starting to eat some of these. So let’s go in and help ourselves with some of these strawberries, because they will be eaten. They will be eaten.
Some of them are not 100% ready yet, but that’s fine. They can go in the house and they can get ready. I threw that one because that one had been eaten by someone. So hopefully they will come in and eat that and leave the rest of my strawberries alone. So I’m getting the ones that look even remotely ripe. I will take them inside. I will love them, I will hug them, and I will call them George — and then I’ll eat them. Is that bad? If you hug a strawberry and call it George and then eat it? But anyway, they look lovely. They look tasty.
Anyway, that hot weather is definitely not global warming, of course. That was sarcasm, by the way. We had ridiculously cool weather, and now we’re getting it ridiculously warm. We have got a heat wave advisory in effect, and by the time you watch this, I will be sweltering. I haven’t had the greenhouse open for, like, three days straight because of it being so cold. And tomorrow I’m going to have to get up early, and I’m going to have to come out here, and I’m going to have to make sure that I open up the greenhouse, because if I don’t, bad things will most definitely happen.
Look at that — strawberries are plenty. My winter cabbage, even — I cannot speak today. My winter cabbage, coming on nicely. My broccoli, coming on nicely. So too for my celery and my lettuce.
Over here I actually have some peas growing, which I’m kind of happy about. So over here we’ve actually got the first of our peas growing. I saw a pod the other day. There’s some over here starting to grow very gently. We’ve got some pea flowers, and then over here the fava beans, they are growing rather nicely as well. And I think I saw some pea pods over here the other day as well. Yes, I know — I still haven’t put the peas up. I’m a terrible gardener. I’ve had other things on my mind, like making sure that we pay our mortgage and stuff.
Which brings me very nicely to me thanking you all — absolutely every single one of you who has stepped up to the plate and made a bit of a donation this week, whether that is increasing your pledge on Patreon or sending us Ko-fi. A couple of you have sent checks through the mail. Thank you very much for that. All of that is going to help. If you don’t — my beloved, who works in the tech world, was laid off last week as a consequence of corporate restructuring, and the mortgage is paid by her salary, or has traditionally been paid by her salary. So her losing her job through no fault of her own means that I now need to step up to the plate and bring in a little bit more from TE.
And if you are regular to this channel, you will know that TE doesn’t bring in a whole lot of spare cash. Now, we pay all of our insurances for everybody and all of that good stuff, but it’s expensive running a business, and we need to increase our income in order to keep a roof over my head, in order to make sure that we can pay for everybody. I’m going to pinch a strawberry right here. Is that a strawberry that’s been hiding in the ground? That’s a ground strawberry. Where did that come from? I think that was a dog, or something happened there. I’m going to harvest it anyway.
So if you’re able to help in any way, shape, or form, please consider supporting us. But thank you to all of those who already did. Some of you just sent job listings, which is also truly amazing and very, very inspirational, so thank you. And some of you said, “hey, if you need help in the future, let us know and we’ll see what we can do.”
Let’s have a look in the greenhouse, because things in the greenhouse are looking incredible. Now, the tomatoes — unfortunately, because I’m filming this earlier in the week, I haven’t had a chance to get in here and do the things that I said I was going to do last week. So these tomatoes need pruning. So do these tomatoes. And I also need to stake my cucumbers, because my cucumbers are going to start making flowers soon and they’re going to need some extra support. Tomatillos also need me to come in and give them some tender loving care, which I’m going to hopefully later this week.
And honestly, with the temperature going as high as it’s going to be going, I’m not looking forward to it. I really do prefer it when the weather is a little bit milder, to be completely honest with you. Sorry — I say the other way around. I prefer it when it’s cooler, not milder.
I have been doing a car review today. So we had the Subaru — I call it the Subaru Sontar, and I know it’s the Subaru Solterra — but I’ve had that on review today and we’ve been filming with it. I filmed a video yesterday that was going to go out yesterday, and then we had a breaking news story, so I’m working on a different video that’s going out — by the time you would have seen it, it’s already gone out — the Donut Lab debacle. And I’m filming these — so in the last two days, I’ve actually filmed six videos, and my brain’s a little bit frazzled, and it’s just gone 5:15 on Tuesday. So I’m going to call it a day.
But before I do — thank you to the amazing list of people scrolling by on either side. They are the reason that we do what we do, and thank you if you are on that list. If you’re not on that list yet and you would like to help us out from $1.50 a month, there are links in the down below that you can use to make that happen. Make sure that you are continuing to be the amazing people that you are. Remember to lift people up. Remember to tell the people in your lives who are important to you that they are important to you. And thank you for continuing to be a positive change in the world. Tell me what’s going on in your garden, as I’d love to know. And until next time, keep evolving.
